Melvin was the 2010 Liberty World Champion (Full Servo Class) and this year is lining up to sail in the European Championships at Rutland Water.
Melvin sails one of our Hansa Liberty sailing dinghys fitted with servo-assisted controls operated by a joystick. The boats are ideal for racing but due to Melvin's particular disability have a limiting factor that means he has particular difficulty trimming the sails for best speed and course. "The joystick controller allows for i
It was great to see so many enthusiastic Tideway faces at our Annual General Meeting in February. We would like to thank everyone who has supported Tideway and particularly the Trustees who have worked incredibly hard over the last year to ensure as many people as possible were able to get out onto the water. Minutes of the formal AGM and the presentation will be available very soon.
We are constantly looking for additional volunteers to support all our activities, not just
For our dedicated maintenance team, it has been a busy winter doing all the jobs that we don't get time to do in the summer. A very wide range of jobs have been completed, from fitting out our new boats, cleaning boat covers and buoyancy aids and tidying up the clubhouse, servicing the outboard, to varnishing the Hawk rudders and painting a Hawk centre plate. Many thanks to the team who have assembled every Wednesday since the beginning of November.
Planning, building and prototype testing is well underway to fit a steering servo to one of the Hawks. This is a first step in trying to make these boats accessible to a wider range of participants. We're mounting a rudder servo controlled by a joystick similar to the system used on the Liberty dinghies and also adapting the boat so it can take a more supporting seat. We hope that if successful we could also use the system on the Martin 16. These boats will still require a cr
Tideway has dinghy and powerboat instructors so how about pushing the boat out and getting your RYA level 2 dingy or power certificate? We can also get you through the RYA First Aid and Safety Boat courses, all of which are valuable skills to have and really help support the club. Refresher training for volunteers ranging from using the hoist to rigging the boats is also planned plus a host of other topics. We will publish some future dates soon but it will really help us coo
Tideway volunteers gathered recently at The Ahoy Centre for a day of disability awareness training. Besides the Tideway contingent there were volunteers from Ahoy and also Shadwell Basin Centre.
The day was a mixture of classroom and practical sessions with role-play to give us a basic idea of the difficulties experienced by disabled sailors negotiating everyday situations such as busy dinghy parks! This included guiding blind and visually impaired individuals and attempting
We have a hectic and fun packed events calendar planned for 2015. If you would like take part or help as a volunteer (rigging etc) please do get in touch as soon as possible by email to firstname.lastname@example.org
We have made two changes to the fees for 2015 which we hope will broaden our community and make us (even) more inclusive. We have made the annual membership fee a nominal £1 to allow our volunteers and supporters, who make such a big contribution to Tideway, to be members on an equal basis with our sailing members. The cost of sailing has also been reduced from £20 to £10 per session (adults) and £5 (young person) for those who do not want to pay an annual fee- regular sailor
Hello everyone and welcome to the first Newsletter for the 2015 season. The clocks have changed, the weather getting a little warmer, and the sun is glistening off the water on the dock. That's enough of the poetry. The committee have put together an interesting and varied program for the year including dock sailing, racing and cruising events planned. Our fleet has been enhanced with additional 303's, a Lark and a Martin 16. There have also been some changes to our fee struc
