Living in London, sailing isn't an obvious sport of choice. I had been looking to get involved in an activity I could progress to competition in for quite some time. By chance I remembered a friend had sailed years ago in an area not far from where I live. I decided to take a look a couple of months ago just to see if it still existed. I checked online and found Tideway Sailing Club.
I was still unsure whether I'd be able to sail or if I'd even like it once I started!
Congratulations to Leslie, who has been awarded the Duke of Devonshire Trophy. It's awarded every year to the sailor from any of the 4 classes with the highest average score. Since Les got 1st in every race, he won it hands down.
8am on Sunday morning- 6 Tideway sailors in both Hawks emerged from the South Dock marina lock for a great sail down river. First sight was HMS Ocean moored by Greenwich towering over us. Feeling well protected we sailed on down through the Thames Barrier all the way to the Dartford Bridge with the tide ebbing. We turned round for a slower sail back to Erith Yacht Club for lunch (helped by EYC members giving us a lift in to their smart clubhouse). Winds were a bit stronge
The Tideway Sailability Regatta was held on 7th June in warm and light northerly conditions. A large fleet took to the water including both Hawks, Access Libertys, 303s, Martin16 and an Omega. Welcome to our Midsummer Newsletter. We have had a very good start to the 2015 sailing season with Wednesday, Thursday and Sunday sessions being well attended by sailors and volunteers. The first river trip in the Hawks to Erith was enjoyed by all and the Tideway Regatta saw many of our members out on the dock competing in a friendly spirit. Melvin and Lesley have both been doing well in external competition supported by a dedicated crew. It is great to see so many Tideway
Notts County TT – National Series No 3. & Northern Series No. 1
Team Tideway – Leslie and myself, supported by Hugh and Kate rolled up to the 3rd meeting in the TT series, which was held only 2 days after the postponed Wealden meeting, on 23rd May at Notts County Sailing Club. A very friendly club set in lush countyside in the Trent valley. We unloaded the boats and set up camp the day before in the club grounds. The gusty wind was still forcast and was perhaps the reason o
Burghfield Travellers Trophy – Hansa Class National Series No.1 & Western Series No.1
Burghfield Sailing Club, near Reading, was the venue for the first of this season's Travellers Trophy series on Tuesday 28th April. Leslie Philip and I represented Tideway in the 303 Single and Liberty classes. Conditions were ideal with a good fresh breeze and sunshine all day. 27 boats turned up to race: 7 x 303 single, 2 x 303 double, 4 x 2.3 and 9 Liberty's. This was a good turn out, e
